Federal Pell Grants
A Federal Pell Grant is a need-based grant that does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. (A professional degree would include a degree in a field such as medicine, law or dentistry.)
To determine whether you're eligible financially, the U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the information you report when you apply for Federal Aid. The formula produces an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number. Your Student Aid Report (SAR) contains this number and will tell you if you're eligible.
How much you receive will depend not only on your EFC but also on your cost of attendance, whether you're a full-time or part-time student, and whether you attend school for a full academic year or less. You may not receive Pell Grant funds from more than one school at a time.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need; that is, students with the lowest EFCs with priority given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants. SEOG is also a need-based grant that does not have to be repaid.
