Wingate, NC – Wingate University held its first Top Scholars Day in 2012 on March 17. The day allowed prospective students to get a look at campus and the chance for one lucky winner to receive free tuition for a semester. Students came from more than five different states to compete for free tuition, meet prospective students, hear from professors and learn more about financial aid. Students gained insight on the future plans of Wingate University from President Dr. Jerry E. McGee.

“Within 48 hours, we had nearly 100 mentions/responses for the first Tweet for Tuition Challenge,” said Ben Richardson, senior admissions counselor and marketing coordinator. “Students were given a flag at the event and were encouraged to take a unique and creative picture using the flag and post it to Twitter.”

The first Tweet for Tuition winner was David Cobb, III from Fairview, N.C. His photo recreated Iwo Jima using army figures and the Wingate University flag. Cobb was new to Twitter. In fact, his first and only tweet to date is the one that earned him free tuition for his first semester. Cobb, who is homeschooled, plans to attend the University in the fall with an intended business management major.

A second Top Scholars Day, which includes another Tweet for Tuition Challenge, is scheduled for April 21. For more information, contact the Wingate University admissions office at 704-233-8368.
