Wingate, N.C.--Wingate achieved recent success in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Annual Clinical Pharmacy Challenge.

The ACCP Clinical Pharmacy Challenge, now in its third year, is a team-based competition. Teams of three students compete against teams from other schools and colleges of pharmacy in a “quiz bowl”–type format designed to test students' clinical pharmacy practice knowledge.

Locally, students are selected by Wingate's ACCP Faculty Liaisons, based on individual performance on a preliminary examination and various intangibles. Students selected to represent the Wingate University School of Pharmacy in this year's competition were Alison Hus, P4 and captain; Chris Miller, P4; Evan MacDonald, P3; Kris Gutierrez, P3 alternate; and James Burrows, P3 alternate.

This year's team advanced to the third round of competition which is the top 32 of 90 participating teams/schools of pharmacy. This is a major accomplishment for Wingate considering, prior to this year, they had never progressed past the first round of competition. Wingate's team scores in both the first and second rounds of competition fell within the top point total quartile. In addition to scoring among the top 15 teams in the country during the first 2 rounds, this year's Wingate representatives take pride in the fact that they outlasted in-state competing schools UNC-Chapel Hill and Campbell who both bowed out in the second round in the competition.

The students representing Wingate are to be commended for their efforts and, as a result of their efforts, establishing a new standard for future participants in the ACCP Clinical Pharmacy Challenge to uphold. It will no longer be "OK" to just participate; students should expect to perform well and advance.

Thank you to Dr. Lindsey Koliscak for taking the time to precept a local exam for interested fourth-year students in the Winston-Salem zone. Additional thanks to Dr. Andrew Woods and Dr. Donald Nuzum for their continued service as Wingate’s ACCP Faculty Liaisons.
