Wingate, N.C. - The Levine College of Health Sciences under construction on the Wingate University campus will be the second LEED certified building in Union County, a standard set for becoming a leader in energy and environmental design.

The $16 million project built by CM Black Construction of Concord is scheduled to open in Fall of 2011. The new three-story building will enable the university to expand its School of Pharmacy, Physician Assistant Studies program and offer other new programs in the health sciences.

The LEED Certification coincides with other green initiatives on campus including a campus-wide recycling program for paper, glass and plastic. The university has installed more than 300,000 square feet of recyclable carpet tile as well as changed over to using low-energy lighting and energy-efficient appliances. It also purchases eco-friendly furniture products.

During recent water shortages, Wingate reduced water usage by installing low-flow shower heads throughout campus and changing over to a tray-less dining hall. This week students have donated their unwanted items to the annual community-wide give-away to save furniture, clothing and other supplies from going to the landfill.

Founded in 1896, Wingate University is a private four-year co-educational institution of 2,159 students offering active learning opportunities through personalized instruction, world travel, career discovery and community service.

Wingate offers 34 undergraduate majors in arts and sciences, business, communication, education, fine arts, music and sport sciences. It also offers graduate degrees in business, accounting, education, physician assistant studies and sport administration. In addition, the school awards the Doctor of Pharmacy and the Doctor of Education degrees.

Bulldog student-athletes compete in 19 NCAA Division II sports. Wingate University has won the South Atlantic Conference Echols Athletic Excellence Award for the past four years.
