Wingate honors Baker family legacy

Wingate, NC – Dedication services were held on Dec. 3, 2010 to recognize the Baker marker honoring Martin Luther Baker and Mary Cox Baker who sent nine of their 11 children to Wingate College. They are the great-grandparents of Wingate University math Adjunct Professor Mike Hammond ‘66. Reverend Hammond also serves as pastor of Jones Crossroads Baptist Church in Lancaster, S.C.
Martin Luther Baker was a farmer and salesman who lived in Wingate with his wife, a homemaker. He was one of the individuals involved in the first planning meeting for the college.
The Baker family marker is located behind the amphitheatre on campus between Burris and Burnside-Dalton buildings. A maple tree located near the marker was planted in October 2009 in memory of the Baker family alumni and their descendants.
