Wingate launches iPhone app developed by its own student

Frazier Smith
Wingate, N.C. – Frazier Smith of Gastonia, N.C. was always interested in computer technology as a high school student at Highland School of Technology in Gaston County. But he also enjoyed singing in the choir and helping to teach music. In 2010, he came to Wingate University as a music major and brought his iPhone.

While studying music, Smith became intrigued with the explosion of iPhone apps. And when he noticed that many universities, including his, did not yet have one, it was music to his ears. He bought a manual, studied it, researched apps from 35 other institutions around the country and took his idea to Wingate's admissions and marketing offices.

Both offices embraced the idea and hired Smith to create what he says is the best of every example he found, plus some new functions of his own. "We've been researching new media markets to enhance recruitment for over a year now and Frazier's timing could not have been better," said Ben Richardson, senior counselor and marketing coordinator for admissions. "Not only will this app attract new students; it will also make the current students experience better. Students can now interact, engage, and connect like never before."

The new app went live Sept. 27 and is a free download from the App store. It has put the University in closer touch with its prospective and current students by providing lists of majors offered, schedules of events and common phone numbers all from the touch of their smart phones. There's even a virtual tour that plays the University's alma mater.

Smith's musical accomplishments have also been noted. He is an instructor for The Salvation Army Divisional Music Department. In 2006, Frazier received the Governor's Volunteer Service Award and in 2010, he received the Marine Corps Musical Excellence award.

His ultimate career plans include middle or high school choral directing which will no doubt incorporate some aspect of technology.
