Wingate standout K. Williams begins pro career in Finland

Kokkola, Finland----Wingate University women’s soccer student-athlete Kerstin Williams (’11, Summerville, S.C.) has signed to play soccer professionally in Finland for Gamlakarleby Bollklubb (GBK). A four-time All-South Atlantic Conference selection, team captain and leading goal scorer three of four seasons for the Bulldogs, Williams has been rewarded with the opportunity to explore a new culture and develop her soccer skills in the next level of competition.

Williams made her first appearance today (Wednesday, May 18, 2011) for GBK. She scored a goal in her team’s 5-0 victory over IK Myran. On Saturday, she walked across the stage during Wingate’s 2011 Commencement Exercises. The Summerville High School product received a B.S. degree in Sport Management. On Monday, she flew to Finland to begin a new chapter in her life.

In 2010, Williams led the Bulldogs with nine goals and 21 points. Williams ranked sixth in the SAC in goals, while ranking eighth in total points. She had two goals (including the match-winner) and an assist in the 3-2 win over Lees-McRae College. Williams netted the match-winner against Brevard College. She had a pair of goals against Chowan University, while also notching a goal and an assist in the 3-0 win at Newberry College. Williams had a goal and an assist in the 3-1 victory over Anderson (S.C.) University.

For her career, Williams recorded 28 goals, nine assists and 65 total points. As a junior, she was third on the Bulldog charts with 19 points (nine goals, one assist). During her sophomore campaign, she started 19 of 20 matches and posted 22 points (nine goals, four assists). Her point total was second on the Wingate team. Williams had one goal and one assist as a true freshman. Williams was a two-time All-County performer at Summerville High School. She was a two-year captain and two-time team Most Valuable Player. Williams led her team in goals scored every season she participated. Kerstin Williams is the daughter of Jerry and Tracey Williams. University and Truman State (Mo.) University have produced more Academic All-America® honorees during this time period.
