Wingate swimmer is national champion
3/11/2011
San Antonio, Texas----Wingate University freshman Marko Blazevski (Skopje, Macedonia) won the NCAA Division II national championship in the 400 Individual Medley with a school-record time of 3:51.29 Thursday night. Blazevski wrote his name in the Bulldog history books at the Palo Alto Natatorium, site of the 2011 national championship meet.
Blazevski had the top time in the morning preliminaries, posting a 3:53.38. He was almost three seconds ahead of the field in the morning prelims. His Thursday night time broke the Wingate school record of 3:52.71, set by Bulldog All-American Kyle Corcoran at the 2009 NCAA Division II national championship meet in Houston.
West Chester University of Pennsylvania senior Kenneth McCormick was second in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 3:52.97, almost four seconds faster than his preliminary time. Drury (Mo.) University sophomore Ryan Arabejo was third with a time of 3:53.97.
Marko Blazevski is the fifth individual swimmer or relay team in Wingate’s senior college history to win a national championship. The Bulldogs captured the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) men’s tennis national team championship in 1970 and 1971 while the school was a two-year institution.
