Wingate, N.C. – On Saturday, Oct. 5, Wingate University held ceremonies to name and dedicate its newest residence hall. The $8.2 million dollar facility is named the J M Smith Hall, in honor of a generous donation made to the University by J M Smith Foundation of Spartanburg, S.C. The J M Smith Corporation is the third largest privately held company in South Carolina and is focused in the areas of healthcare and technology.

The three-story, 300-bed dorm opened on Jan. 5 and is located on the north side of campus next door to The Batte Fine Arts Center. J M Smith Hall has the latest state-of-the-art security and has many energy-efficient amenities.

“Educational research demonstrates that when students are physically closer to academic support services (classrooms, faculty, tutoring, etc.) they do better in school the closer they are to those resources,” Rhett Brown, vice president for student life and enrollment services, said at the dedication. “And you can’t get any closer than Smith Hall to the core of our campus.”
