Wingate, NC – Two Wingate University student interns are preparing
tax returns for low income and elderly taxpayers as part of the
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. This service is provided by the Union County Department of Social Services. Elizabeth Underwood and Tamara Burke meet with taxpayers and prepare and file their returns electronically.

Both students are senior business majors at Wingate University. They studied beforehand and had to pass basic and intermediate tests before beginning their internships. Burke, an accounting major, spoke about her experience. “There’s a lot to know,” she said. “It’s really exciting and our clients are appreciative.” The internships conclude at the end of tax season on April 18.

Their professor, Robert Threatt, said internships benefit his
students by helping them learn how to interact with people while
gaining experience filling out the returns.

Both students will graduate in May and will go on to graduate
programs in accounting. Underwood plans to enroll in Wingate's new
Master of Accounting program.
