Wingate, N.C. – The Wingate University School of Pharmacy (WUSOP) received a grant from Walgreens Corporation for “student pipeline opportunity” use. Pharmacy, nursing, physician assistant studies and the physical therapy program in partnership with Cuthbertson High School, in Union County, are offering two mini health science summer camps. Thirty-two students registered for the two camps being held in July.

Camp activities are being held on Wingate University’s main campus. Program faculty and student representatives are conducting the programs to deliver information about their respective professions. Active learning activities engage students and allow them to experiment with tasks related to the profession. For instance, in nursing and pharmacy, students will perform lab-related activities such as measuring liquid doses.

“The School of Pharmacy hosted a health science summer camp last summer that targeted Union County middle school students. Thirty-two children participated from eleven middle schools across Union County,” said Dr. Carolyn Ford, WUSOP professor and assistant dean of academic services. “As a result of the partnership that was developed last summer, several middle schools have requested the School of Pharmacy’s participation in various health science related activities.”
