Wingate, N.C. – Ninety-one Wingate University students participated in W’International trips to Germany, Estonia, Spain/Morocco and the French Caribbean during the month of May. The choir also took a separate trip to Estonia, where they won an international competition. A literature class visited England and Ireland. Twelve students are studying language immersion in Costa Rica. Including these trips, as well as internships over the summer, 155 students will have had an international experience this summer.
Wingate University has offered a unique international study-tour program called W'International since 1978. After attending a one-hour seminar once a week during the regular semester, students travel for 10 days to their chosen destination with the faculty member after classes end. “Our study abroad programs, including W'International, have continued to offer a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn outside the classroom in ways they never expected or thought possible,” said Jennifer Armentrout, director of international studies at the University. “I'm especially proud of our students that really throw themselves into the experience and realize how much they can learn by being open to what they encounter abroad.”
The study abroad program was pioneered to help students gain real world experience. “Wingate University has been well-represented by our students that go abroad and bring back a new appreciation of where they live as well as a fresh perspective on the world,” Armentrout said. “Our programs are an essential part of the Wingate University experience.” The University’s international program offers travel opportunities, as well as community outreach and a week-long celebration during International Week.
