Wingate University students lend a hand at horse farm
Wingate, NC – Wingate University students spent the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by lending a hand at a local horse rescue farm in Wingate. Carolina Equine Rescue and Assistance (CERA), is a 14-acre farm in Wingate that Darlene Kindle began four years ago.
Horses that are abused or malnourished take refuge on the farm, as well as owner-surrendered horses. In addition to the horses, several pigs, chickens, peacocks, dogs and cats roam freely.
Wingate University students helped groom the menagerie of animals and helped with yard work. According to Kindle, it was the fourth time that students came out to help on the farm.
Service learning is an integral component of the students’ education at the University. Wingate students regularly volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, the Council on Aging and participate in alternative spring breaks helping others. Other activities include raising awareness during Hunger and Homelessness Week, facilitating a recycling and green initiative program, as well as tutoring and mentoring.
