Wingate, NC – Wingate University will showcase the work of blues artist Fleetwood Covington in a free exhibit starting in mid-January. The collection will be on display Jan. 15 through Feb. 28 in the C. Douglas Helms Gallery, located in the George A. Batte, Jr. Fine Arts Center. A resident of Wilmington, N.C., Covington creates unique drawings depicting rural settings and blues performers.
In addition to his artwork, Covington will share his musical talents as he performs a storytelling blues concert on Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. in the Batte Center Recital Hall. The free concert will include a reception with the artist.
“I try to create art that people can relate to on a very basic level,” Covington said. “Using raw materials and a raw documentary approach, I try to project a reverence, not only for the cultural/historical aspects of my subjects, but for the integrity of the individuals as well. Having been raised in the South, I feel a deep connection to the landscape and its people, and I’m always trying to capture its unique beauty, energy and humor.”
Dr. Louise Napier, chair of the Wingate University Art Department, calls Covington's appearance a rare opportunity. "We are delighted to host this artist since he limits his exhibits and shows to a select few," she said.
