Wingate, N.C. – Wingate University began classes this week for the 2013-14 academic year with the largest student body in the University’s history. The 730 new students, including freshmen and transfers, add to the upperclassmen for a total undergraduate and graduate student population of nearly 3,000.

The new students represent 25 states and 23 countries. Hometowns for these new students are as near as Unionville and Marshville, N.C., and as far away as Peru, Ghana and Denmark. The total student body represents every continent except Antarctica. The international program on campus is very active and continually growing.

A third of Wingate students participate in sports. The University’s athletes compete in 22 NCAA Division II sports. Additionally, there is an active intramural program on campus. Two hundred twenty of the incoming students are student-athletes.

The most popular programs for new students include pre-pharmacy, pre-nursing, biology and sport management. "Wingate's undergraduate enrollment success this year is a direct result of consistent leadership, attractive academic programs, a beautiful campus, and dedicated faculty and staff,” said Gabe Hollingsworth, director of admissions. “This upward trajectory is a team effort at all levels."
