Wingates coming together on new plan

University joins forces with the town to create a more desirable community for the future

Wingate, NC - Wingate, N.C. is known by many people as the small town they pass on the way to the beach. Now there's a plan in place that could transform the area into a diverse college community.

Wingate University, local officials and citizens have been working with GHD Consulting for the past six months on an economic development plan for the year 2020. The plan recommends a town center, accessible green space and promotes organized, controlled growth.

The University is collaborating with the town to foster a better sense of community for all residents . Organizers also hope to improve the quality of life, increase property values and spur economic development. Suggestions in the plan include more housing options, four more parks, a University-affiliated pharmacy, senior housing and medical offices, safe crosswalks, greenways and bike trails and a new location for government buildings.

"The University has made an effort in recent years to work closely with the town toward a master plan for its future growth," said Chuck Taylor, vice president for business at Wingate University. He said the plan, which incorporates student input, also supports the University's goal to provide students with the amenities they need without leaving the community. "Our job is to create and sustain the best possible learning environment. For today’s students, that environment extends beyond the services and amenities available on campus. The proper development of the village that surrounds the campus is extremely important."

The plan is a culmination of several town meetings during which more than 400 local citizens and students shared their visions for Wingate’s future. Wingate University helped fund the $58,000 project.

The campus of Wingate University spans about 400 acres and is within walking distance from the town's current and future commercial areas. The Wingate University Levine College of Health Sciences, slated to open in fall 2011, is expected to help support the local economy by adding more students and programs.
