Facilities
Students at Wingate often mention the opportunities and
advantages available to them at Wingate, such as:
- Excellent faculty members and facilities
- Small class sizes
- Having professors (not graduate students) teach lectures and
labs
The Department of Biology is located in the Smith Science
Building. Smith Science houses five biology laboratories, three
lecture classrooms, animal care
and greenhouse facilities, a scanning electron microscope
laboratory, a DNA analysis minilab, and faculty offices. The biology
labs are equipped to provide effective teaching and hands-on
experience for students in biology courses
and in student/faculty research.
Some of the equipment which students will use in their work
includes:
- a scanning electron microscope
- spectrophotometers (visible and UV)
- adiabatic bomb calorimeter
- HEPA laminar flow hood for aseptic tissue cultures
- incubators for bacterial, fungal and animal cell cultures
- ultra-low temperature for storing cultures and biotech
reagents
- DNA analysis equipment including PCR and electrophoresis
units
Collecting gear, a radiotelemetry system, and portable sampling
devices for soil and water samples facilitate ecological fieldwork
for both class and research.
The university has an 11-acre lake, streams and ponds. These
combined with surrounding forest and field ecosystems provide
convenient on-campus sites for environmental investigation and
research projects. Plants and animals collected in the field can be
maintained for observation and research in the animal labs or
greenhouse.
Since the primary purpose of Wingate University is teaching,
students use laboratory equipment in their courses and research -
there is no competition for equipment with graduate students. Direct
access to faculty members for assistance in lab or during office
hours is an advantage for many students.
