CurriculumOne of the emphases of the chemistry department
is to expose students to a variety of instrumentation. To facilitate
this in the freshman lab, each pair of students is assigned:
- an electronic balance accurate to 0.001g
- a Spec 20 for chemical analysis
- a hand-held pH/Temperature meter
- a computer to perform least-squares analysis
In the organic
chemistry lab, students learn techniques for the synthesis and
characterization of molecules. This involves the use of high
temperature reflux, roto-vap, polarization, Infrared analysis and
separations. An introduction to molecules of biological importance
is
presented in the second semester.
In the upper
divisional labs, emphasis is placed on the accuracy and precision of
lab-work, using current instrumental analysis techniques as well as
foundational techniques that prepare the student for any career
option, including industry, academics, and medicine.
