Wingate University's Department of Chemistry was formed in 1987 and has been steadily growing in both majors and instrumentation. At this time, there are an average of four chemistry majors a year, which allows for close interaction between the faculty and the students.

There are two areas of emphasis in the department. One is the incorporation of instrumentation and computers into classes, from introductory and general chemistry through the upper level classes. This access to instrumentation allows students to perform experiments at high levels of accuracy and precision.

Another area of emphasis is the involvement of students in research with the professors. Each professor has several projects that the students can work on during their junior and senior year. This collaboration between the professor and student has led to several presentations at regional American Chemical Society meetings in recent years.
