Math Contest 2010
Welcome to the High School Mathematics Competition
Hosted by Wingate University. The Mathematics Department of Wingate
University hosts a High School Mathematics Contest every year in
April. The competition is administered on the main campus of Wingate
University located in Wingate, North Carolina. Participation is open
to all junior high school and senior high school students and is
divided into four divisions: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and
Comprehensive.
For each division, a school may send up to four
students. These four students are the school’s team for that
division. The highest scoring teams and individuals will be
recognized in each division.
The examinations are constructed by the
Mathematics Department at Western Carolina University to test speed
as well as technical competence of the participant. The forty
multiple choice questions on each exam are posed to reflect the
notation and terminology of most textbooks adopted by schools in the
Western North Carolina area; however, the mathematical topics
covered on the examinations are those commonly included in a course
of the same name as the division of the contest. For more
information on the North Carolina State Math Competition see the
State Wide Website.
Participants may appreciate knowing that the last
ten questions on each test are typically considered to test a deeper
understanding of the material than the first thirty questions.
