WelcomeThe Department of Religion & Philosophy at Wingate
University focuses primarily on Christian traditions; many of our
students are preparing for leadership roles in ministry or
academics. Since our students are rooted in several denominational
traditions and will find themselves working in increasingly
pluralistic settings, there are no narrow or sectarian limitations
on curriculum or on student projects.
Maturity springs from dynamic encounters with the actual breadth
of Christian tradition and related perspectives. This occurs best
when freedom of inquiry and expression are a valued part of the
classroom and seminar experience.
Most of our graduates continue their education in a seminary or
other
graduate program. To that end, our curriculum is designed to nurture
scholarly skills. Reading assignments include classics as well as
contemporary, critical work. Student work tends to be
writing-intensive, ranging from short essays to lengthy research
papers so students will benefit from opportunities to work
individually with professors. A personal library of significant
works is essential in virtually any profession, so books for student
use are chosen based on their continuing value for lifelong study.
