Dr. Heather McDivitt joined the Wingate University faculty in August 2006. She finished her PhD in Systematic Theology from the University of Edinburgh, in Edinburgh, Scotland during the summer of 2006. Her PhD dissertation was titled: “More than Atonement: The event of the Cross in the Theology of Karl Barth.”

While completing her PhD, Dr McDivitt participated in semester exchanges in Germany at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Tuebingen. She presented papers at conferences in Dublin, Ireland and Leuven, Belgium. Prior to her PhD Dr. McDivitt studied theology at Princeton Theological Seminary. While completing her Master of Divinity degree, Dr. McDivitt worked as a graduate assistant at the Princeton University Chapel. Prior to studying theology Dr. McDivitt received degrees in education and worked for four years as a public school teacher.

Dr. McDivitt’s academic interests include medical ethics, religion and World War II, interfaith dialogue, the spiritual development of children and teens, and religion and sport in American society. Dr. McDivitt is currently taking part in the “faculty in residence” program at Wingate University. She resides in the Jefferson Apartments alongside students. Dr. McDivitt wants to help bridge the learning and living communities on campus by working with the Residence Life offices and the faculty members to provide more opportunities for academic discussion and reflection.

In the summer of 2007 Dr. McDivitt participated in the Jesse Ball duPont summer seminar at the National Humanities Center. The seminar topic was: “Human Nature: Ethical Implications of Biological, Cultural, and Technological Transformation,” and the seminar members recently met for follow-up work.
