Career Opportunities in PhilosophyA major in philosophy is
regarded by many as one of the best courses of preparation for
certain related kinds of graduate and professional education.
Schools of law, medicine, theology and government as well as
graduate departments of art, literature, economics and behavioral
sciences respect philosophical study as a sound basis for advanced
education. For several years, philosophy majors in this country have
achieved the highest scores on the verbal portion of the Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) among all the majors, while scoring in the
top three on analytic skills.
A recent trend among businesses to hire young adults with
humanities majors like philosophy, religion, literature or history
stems from their need for employees who have cultivated skills of
discernment and who can communicate dynamically with diverse people
in the global marketplace. By the same token, the primary task of
tomorrow's university students must be learning to be lifelong
learners. Flexibility, critical thinking, and the ability to solve
puzzling problems posed by a rapidly changing world are the specific
skills engendered by the study of philosophy.
