Sociology at WingateExperience the excitement of studying
Sociology at Wingate University. Explore the dynamics of group
interaction, investigate the causes of social problems and develop
strategies for analyzing societal processes and institutions.
Prepare for a rewarding career in policy analysis, multicultural
programming,
human services or family support programs. Develop your sociological
imagination through elective courses, minors or a major in
sociology.
The Department of Sociology at Wingate University offers personal
mentorship to students at all levels throughout the curriculum. The
department offers a comprehensive major, preparing students for
either an immediate career following graduation or for further
graduate study. Also, students can opt to minor in either sociology
or family studies. And, of course, many students choose sociology
courses as vital, interesting and challenging electives.
Class sizes in sociology courses are small enough for
intentional, caring mentorship of each student by the faculty. The
sociology faculty also employ experienced students as in-class
assistants in several of their classes, who serve as peer mentors
and tutors, providing additional help to students individually or in
small groups as needed, both in class and outside of class.
Not only relying on lectures to impart course materials, the
professors engage students in participative, collaborative and
experimental learning activities. Students learn the craft of
participant and non-participant observation, survey research and
experimental design. Students may also engage in summer research
with a sociology professor through the university's duPont research
program.
Global awareness is an integral component of all sociology
courses. In addition, sociology majors are encouraged to participate
in the university's W'International travel program.
