Sport ManagementThe Wingate University
Sport Management major is a cooperative interdisciplinary program
between the the Department of Sport Sciences and the School of
Business and Economics. Sport Management combines courses in Sport
Sciences with courses in Business Administration to provide today's
student with the skills necessary for success in the new
millennium. In addition to the general education requirements (GER)
of the university, the student will take courses in facility
management, sport law, sport history, and sport leadership from the
Department of Sport Sciences as well as courses in economics,
accounting, marketing, and business management from the School of
Business and Economics.
Starting Fall Semester of 2006 Wingate University will offer the
Master of Education in Sport
Administration and the
Master of Education in Physical
Education. These classes will be taught at Wingate
University Metro College in Matthews.
So, how do I
"do" my sport management experience at Wingate?
While at Wingate University, students will gain real-world
experience planning and running recreation experiences for the
general campus population and local community. These experiences
range from organizing the Homecoming 5K Road Race and intramural
activities to collaborative design of new university facilities and
participation at the yearly North Carolina meeting of the American
Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance in
Greensboro (NCAAHPERD).
Can I do a
formal internship? Can I earn credit for it?
YES! The capstone course of the major is a six-hour
internship class, completed in the senior year, where the student
will actually work with a sports organization. The internship, while
providing hands-on experience, serves to prepare the student for the
transition from college to the workplace (see the college catalog
for details).
What type of
career will I have?
The Sport Management major is someone who wants a career in a
sport-related business or organization. Budgeting, marketing, gender
equity, accessibility, accountability, tax codes, and legal
liability are just a few of the issues for today's sport leader. The
sport manager is someone in a support position who is involved in
the business of providing sport or sport activities to the public.
