The Department of English at Wingate University offers majors in:
- English
- English & Education
Students who major in English combine core studies in language
and literary classics with electives in contemporary subjects such
as film or women's studies, autobiography, Irish or African American
literature. We do not use graduate students to teach our courses;
even our freshman English program is taught by fully-qualified,
permanent faculty in the English department. Members of the English
faculty are also very active in the University's international
programs.
Students who major in English may use elective hours to pursue
either a second major or a double minor, further increasing their
career opportunities. An English major can lead to many different and fulfilling occupations;
the
department works with other programs on campus to help graduates
with
career placement concerns.
English is an established path to professional school. Some of our
recent graduates have completed graduate studies in business,
education, English, law, library science and religion.
We are developing a new creative writing emphasis that will bring
professional authors to campus to teach seminars or workshops in
genres like poetry, screen-writing, science fiction, the novel, the
short story and the memoir.
The department is affiliated with Sigma Tau Delta, a national
honor society.
