One of the smallest Latin American countries, Costa Rica is home to
an incredible five percent of total world biodiversity in 12
different life-forms. The country also exhibits extreme geographical
diversity, including active volcanoes and lush primary growth rain
forests. Costa Ricans have preserved this irreplaceable biodiversity
by creating protected areas covering more than 25% of the nation’s
territory. Students will explore some of these areas in search of
the plants and animals that have made Costa Rica the ecotourist’s
paradise. Students will also study the history of the oldest South
American democracy from pre-Columbian days to the present. Note:
This trip will involve extensive walking/hiking and exposure to the
natural elements of the Costa Rican environment (weather and
animals).
