Germany: Berlin, Weimar, and Potsdam
Germanies of the 20th Century: Architecture of Memory
Dr. Bob Billinger
BU 210
Tuesday, 5:15-6:05 p.m.
Berlin, Weimar, and Potsdam symbolize the socialist, democratic, and
militarist strands of German history that formed the warp and woof
of German identity in the twentieth century. These three
distinctively different cities will be the destinations for this
exploration of the soul of twentieth century Germany. Each city
symbolizes a different German identity, and the three cities reveal
the existence of multiple possibilities for German national
character. They also reveal the possibilities and limitations within
all human character and endeavor. The pre-travel component of the
course will concentrate on a survey of German history in the
twentieth century and its changing interpretation by historians.
Special focus will be upon the “architecture of memory,” the
physical remnants of the past that are clues to the society and
mindset of various stages of German historical evolution in the
twentieth century.
