Singapore and Malaysia
Crossroads of Trade,
Cultures and Religions
Dr. Jim Hastings
HA 223
Tuesday, 5:15-6:05pm
The city-state of Singapore and the Malaysian city of Melaka sit
near the equator on the Malacca Straits, at the crossroads of trade
routes that have been used for millennia by Malay, Arab, Indian,
Chinese and European traders. Today, these countries are thoroughly
modern and tourist-friendly as they attempt to retain vestiges of
their traditional, multiethnic pasts. This W’International program
will examine the histories of Melaka and Singapore, focusing
especially upon the mix of cultures, religions, and cuisines that
has given each its distinctive contemporary identity. In Singapore,
students will have a mini-tour of Asia, through guided walking tours
of Chinese, Indian and Malay districts. In Melaka, they will see
cultural and architectural remnants of colonial occupation, visit
the well-preserved homes and temples of Chinese traders, and tour a
Malay village.
