INTERNATIONAL STUDIES STUDENT BLOG

Mattie Garrell '07

Mattie was one of 17 Wingate students who participated in the Fall 2006 Wingate-In-London program. The group of juniors and seniors lived together in flats and studied art, history, theatre and English literature with one Wingate faculty member and British adjuncts. Mattie grew up in a small town in North Carolina not too far from Wingate. She enjoys reading, watching movies, hanging out with friends and family, and art (especially photography).

Favorite International trip?

I went to Peru when I was sixteen as part of a mission trip with my sister and another of my friends.  The thing that made it so great was how much I learned about myself and who I was.

Why I love to travel...
I love to see the things that I have never seen before, to appreciate the things that I have, and to find myself and who I am -- being defined only by myself.  The times that I have been out of the country have helped me see who I am and allowed me grow into the person that I am.  It is strange to find that the more you are away from the things that you know, the more you learn about life and how to live it.

Classes Begin

I made it through my first week of classes! We rode the tube to the Anglo-American building in Bloomsbury Square every day. The only bad thing about our classes is that they are in an 18th-century building that still has no air-conditioning. Our classroom is in the attic, four floors up. It has been unusually warm here during this time of the year. The classes that we had were two English classes, Theater, Art and History of London. For three of the five classes we were able to leave the classroom and actually experience the things that were are learning about. In the National Gallery one of our assignments was to compare two works of art. One girl in my group was pointing at a piece of medieval art and I guess she got a bit too close to the painting. Before I knew it the boring security guard that was in this room came to life and jumped all over the girl. We were all shocked and surprised by this sudden outburst but I think that we all understood why she was taking it so seriously. The work was hundreds of years old and was priceless, there was no way that it could have bee replaced. I love London and now that I can halfway get around without looking so much like a tourist I am experiencing the real city and having a blast.
