Below is a sample of what the academic transcript looks like in IRISLink.
The term (sometimes called semester) and cumulative GPAs come from dividing the the grade points you've earned by the hours you've attempted. Hours attempted are different from the hours you've earned. In the column below (SEMESTER 1), when you add up the hours attempted, you get a total of 15 for the semester. The grade points add up to 36. This is the semester GPA: 36 ÷ 15 = 2.400. Note that right now the cumulative GPA is the same as the term GPA, because it is the student's first semester.
When you look at SEMESTER 2, however, the term GPA and the cumulative GPA are different. The term GPA is figured the same way (the sum of the semester grade points divided by the sum of the semester hours attempted), but the cumulative GPA is calculated like this:
(SEMESTER 1 grade points + SEMESTER 2 grade points)
__________________________________________________ = cumulative GPA
(SEMESTER 1 hours attempted + SEMESTER 2 hours attempted)
Each successive semester will show a term GPA and a cumulative GPA, which is the sum of all your grade points divided by the sum of all your hours attempted.
