PEER TUTORING PROGRAM
"STUDENTS HELPING STUDENTS"
 |
What is the peer tutoring
program?
The peer tutoring program is a free program of support for all
currently enrolled Wingate University undergraduate students.
Tutoring is a paid position, but there is no charge to students. The
tutoring program is certified by the
College Reading and
Learning Association (CRLA).
Who are the tutors?
Tutors are Wingate University students who are interested in
helping other students learn in a comfortable, friendly, peer
situation. Tutors have earned at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have an
A or B in the course for which they tutor and have the
recommendation of at least one professor. Most tutors have completed
a minimum of 10 hours of training. Certified tutors
have met the
training and experience hours specified by CRLA’s
International Tutor Program Certification criteria.
TO REQUEST A TUTOR
The tutoring program, free to all currently enrolled students, is
dedicated to assisting you in meeting your academic goals. Peer
tutors are recommended by their professors and are available for
most courses. All tutoring takes place in the comfortable and
convenient Academic Resource Center (ARC), which is located in the
Ethel K. Smith Library. Students may request an appointment
with a tutor through
this website, by calling 704.233.8265 or by coming to the tutoring
center.
WHO BENEFITS FROM TUTORING?
Students who benefit from tutoring
- have realistic, achievable goals;
- take personal responsibility and recognize the effort they
must put in achieving those goals;
- realize that working with a peer tutor can help them reach
their goals.

How can I
become a peer tutor?
If you are looking for extra income, enjoy helping others,
have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, an A or B in the course for
which you would like to tutor, a recommendation from the professor
and can work flexible hours, then tutoring may be for you.
Tutors supplement the classroom instruction by helping students clarify concepts from classes,
guiding of skills
practice and helping with learning effective strategies.
Applications to tutor are available in the ARC.
WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED OF ME IF I BECOME A TUTOR?
Wingate University peer tutors:
- provide individual and small group tutoring for subject
areas and study strategies as appropriate
- work in the ARC unless other arrangements are needed
- attend training workshops and meetings as required
- refer students to the Director if the student’s personal
and/or academic needs are beyond the scope of the tutor’s
expertise
- will keep accurate records
- will participate in an evaluation process
- will maintain confidentiality at all times

DO TUTORS RECEIVE JOB TRAINING?
The tutoring program is certified by the College Reading and
Learning Association (http://www.crla.net). Tutors who participate in the
interactive training workshops and complete the minimum hours of tutoring
can become certified tutors. Being a certified tutor provides you
with training to enhance your skills, a higher
rate of pay and increased skill in working with students.
Training is offered each semester. Interested tutors should
call the ARC for the dates of the next training session.

WHERE CAN I GET HELP WITH PAPERS?
writing
assistance
Writing assistance to help students become better writers is
available by trained peer tutors on an appointment basis. Tutors
will help currently enrolled Wingate students with any stage of the
writing process, including planning, drafting and revising. Students
can expect this to be a collaborative, supportive process, but not a
proofreading or editing service. Appointments can be made to meet
with a writing tutor through the on-line tutor scheduling program,
where these tutors are listed under the subject "writing," or by
coming to the ARC. Students should schedule appointments at least 24
hours in advance and come prepared with their assignments and drafts
or ideas along with specific questions.
Students are also encouraged to use internet resources such as
owl@owl.english.purdue.edu, offered by Purdue University.
This on-line resource includes links to numerous handouts on topics
related to writing. Students are also able to ask questions and
receive answers about writing via e-mail through the Purdue site.
