                      PEER TUTORING PROGRAM

                  "STUDENTS HELPING STUDENTS"

What is the peer tutoring program?

The Tutoring Program, part of the Academic Resource Center (ARC), was established as a support service for undergraduate students in the mid 1980s. It is nationally certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) at Levels I, II and III. The service is FREE and easy to access. Qualified tutors are listed in a web-based scheduling program and students simply schedule appointments via the on-line system or come to the ARC for assistance in making appointments.

Who are the tutors?

Tutors are other Wingate University students who have been successful in their courses and recommended by their professors. From the perspective of students who have "been there, done that," they help their fellow students understand course content and refine learning skills.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM WORKING WITH PEER TUTORS?

Most students can. At Wingate University it is expected that students will take advantage of support services to help them achieve their goals. Whether they are trying to keep an A or trying to manage with a particularly challenging course, they can benefit from the assistance of a tutor.

HOW DO STUDENTS GET HELP WITH PAPERS?

The Writing Center offers specialized help with every stage of the writing process for papers in any course.

expectations
You can expect your tutor

  • to be a friend
  • to respect your privacy
  • to be knowledgeable
  • to attend all scheduled appointments
  • to help you prepare for tests
  • to encourage you
  • to help you develop your study skills

Your tutor will expect you

  • to be on time for scheduled appointments
  • if you cannot keep an appointment, to cancel it at least 24 hours in advance
  • to have read the assignment
  • to bring your materials (textbook, notes, etc.)
  • to have done your homework first and come with questions
  • understand that he or she is a peer helper, not a teacher

PLEASE NOTE: Tutors will not edit, correct, or help you with homework that is to be graded. They will try and help you develop critical thinking skills, work similar problems, assist you in understanding how you can do your work, and recommend other resources such as reference librarians, your professors and web resources.

How can I  become a peer tutor?
If you are looking for extra income, enjoy helping others, have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, an A or B in the course for which you would like to tutor, a recommendation from the professor and can work flexible hours, then tutoring may be for you.  Tutors supplement the classroom instruction by helping students clarify concepts from classes, guiding of skills practice and helping with learning effective strategies.   Applications to tutor are available in the ARC.

WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED OF ME IF I BECOME A TUTOR?

Wingate University peer tutors:

  •  provide individual and small group tutoring for subject areas and study strategies as appropriate
  • work in the ARC unless other arrangements are needed
  • attend training workshops and meetings as required
  • refer students to the Director if the student’s personal and/or academic needs are beyond the scope of the tutor’s expertise
  • keep accurate records
  • participate in an evaluation process
  • maintain confidentiality at all times

DO TUTORS RECEIVE JOB TRAINING?
The tutoring program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (http://www.crla.net). Tutors who participate in the interactive training workshops and complete the required hours of tutoring can become certified tutors. Being a certified tutor provides you with training to enhance your skills,  a higher rate of pay and increased skill in working with students.

Training is offered each semester.  Interested tutors should call the ARC for the dates of the next training session.

WHERE CAN I GET HELP WITH PAPERS?

writing assistance
Writing assistance to help students become better writers is available by trained peer tutors through the Writing Center. Tutors will help currently enrolled Wingate students with any stage of the writing process, including planning, drafting and revising. Students can expect this to be a collaborative, supportive process, but not a proofreading or editing service.
