Department of History & Political Science

Letter from the Chair
Welcome to Wingate University’s Department of History and Political Science.  As Chair, I invite you to look around our website and contact me with any questions or comments you might have. As for the department, we are the second largest in the Cannon College of Arts and Sciences, featuring eight full-time faculty.  In addition, the Department plays a critical role in the teaching of Wingate’s critically acclaimed core course curriculum, teaching three of the six required courses.  The Department also happens to educate the largest number of students annually.    We are proud of the role we play at Wingate and the breadth of disciplines, fields and time periods covered.

Each of our faculty specializes in a different region of the world: Dr. Ellis in comparative political science, Dr. Hastings in South Asian history, Dr. Hino in African and Middle Eastern history, Dr. Hoefferle in American, British and women’s history, Dr. Hyland in Latin American, migration and global history, and Dr. Krajewska in immigration and politics. We use a variety of research and teaching methods, bringing a wide range of perspectives to our topics. All of us have lived outside the United States at some point in our lives, and eagerly bring our global perspectives to our study of history and politics.

Our department offers a major in history and minors in History, Political Science,
International Studies, and Social Science. Many of our history majors also minor in Legal Studies if they plan to go on to Law School, Women’s Studies if they anticipate careers in human sciences and humanities, or a number of other related fields, such as communication, sociology, psychology, or criminal justice. If you are interested in majoring in history at Wingate University, please look over the links to our history major requirements and listing of courses we offer.

We have also included a number of links to other websites of interest to students and historians. Many potential history majors wonder what careers you can have with a history major; certainly a fair concern.  We are convinced that we teach our students to enter successfully enter a wide variety of vocations and professional fields. Here’s a sample of the careers one can pursue!

The History News Network is a good link to see what professional historians are up to, debating and concerned about.

The Department  is also very proud of our active international history honor society,
Phi Alpha Theta.  This group of active and talented students organize events on campus, such as film screenings, and attend regional and national conferences.  Phi Alpha Theta students may also get the opportunity to conduct original, archival research with one of the Department’s faculty members.

Please feel free to click through our faculty pages to learn more about each of us and explore our syllabi, courses, and research.

If you would like further information about any of these items or have any questions, please contact me at
. I’d love to hear from you!

Best wishes,
