Planning for Your Job and Internship Search
Starting the job or internship search process can seem like a daunting task. It does not matter where you are – just starting college or about to graduate – you can take several steps now that will increase your chances of success even in the tough economy.
The first step involves knowing where you want to go. What is your career objective? If you do not have a specific career in mind, then think about what you might like to do and move a step closer to that. Meet with your Career Advisor to help you clarify your goals and interests.
Once you have your goal established, then you need to create tasks and strategies associated with each goal to help you achieve them. Attach a timeline to each strategy to help keep you on track. If you need assistance developing a plan, plan a visit with your Career Advisor.
Set aside time each week to work on the tasks and strategies you developed in your plan. Keep a record of each job and internship search activity and have someone you trust help hold you accountable. Make sure to track your results and revise your plan if necessary.
Stay focused and organized. Remember to tailor your resume and cover letter documents for each position. Even the smallest mistake like addressing the cover letter to the wrong person can hurt your chances of getting an interview and is unprofessional.
