Writing Center Policies and Procedures

The Writing Center offers all University students, staff, faculty and alumni an opportunity to become stronger, more confident writers by offering tutoring sessions for all classes, self-help tutorials and handouts, faculty consultations, workshops and critique services. These services are free, but we encourage you to be aware of the following policies in order to gain the most benefit from our services.
Appointments and Walk-Ins
  • Sessions may be 30 or 60 minutes

  • Walk-in sessions are more likely to be available early in the semester

  • Schedule appointments at least a day or two before the paper is due

  • Bring the assignment or writing prompt with you to your session

  • For paper critiques or longer papers, we strongly encourage you to email an attachment along with the assignment and a few comments about your concerns

  • Arrive a few minutes before your session so we can check you in

Lateness
  • If you are more than five minutes late, your appointment may be cancelled so the tutor can help a walk-in student

  • If you are late but the tutor is still available, you may only have the time remaining in your original appointment - so be on time!

Cancellation and Missed Appointments

  • If you cannot make an appointment, please call and cancel
  • If you miss two appointments without canceling, you will not be able to make another appointment for 30 days; you may still have walk-in sessions
“Ask A Tutor”
  • Call the Writing Center for quick answers to short, specific questions on grammar or mechanics

  • E-mail the Writing Center for quick answers to short, specific questions on grammar or mechanics; answers in less than 24 hours

Please Remember…
  • We are not  an editing service. The tutors cannot “fix” your paper for you; they will work with you to help you identify and address problem areas for yourself

  • You are in charge of revising and editing your paper; we cannot guarantee error-free papers

  • The Writing Center will not discuss possible grades with you; that's your professor's responsibility

Workshops
  • “Open” Workshops will be scheduled periodically throughout the semester on a variety of topics. Please refer to the workshop schedule to determine if you need to register in advance

  • Professors may schedule in-class workshops after a consultation with the Writing Center regarding content. Please contact the Writing Center at least one week prior to the desired workshop date

  • At times,  public workshops may be offered through the Writing Center on a variety of topics. Public attendees will be required to pay a registration fee, but these will be free to students, staff, and faculty. Registration is required, however.

Faculty & Staff
  • All of the above policies and services pertain to faculty and staff, as well as students

  • Faculty are encouraged to forward writing prompts and assignments to the Writing Center so we may address your students’ writing concerns with your requirements in mind

  • Faculty may schedule a five-minute tutor visit for their class. Please contact us one week prior to the class

  • Consultations with the Director are available by appointment to all Faculty to discuss integrating writing specific exercises in their classes, generating effective writing prompts, grading rubrics for writing assignments, etc.

Alumni & General Public
  • The Writing Center services are available to our alumni and in some instances, the local community

  • All of the above policies apply to our alumni and the public, but please be aware that providing for our students, faculty and staff take precedence in scheduling

  • The Writing Center is happy to prepare and present writing workshops, seminars, or “visits” by our tutors or Director for local schools, businesses, and organizations on behalf of Wingate University. Please contact the Writing Center for details at 704-233-0000

The Writing Center Staff hopes to see you soon and we look forward to helping you become a stronger, more confident writer!
