Jobs and Internships 440 - 11/19/2013
Working while you are in college can be a lot to take on. It’s a hefty balance that has to be managed between your job and your school work. Grades come first but we could all use the extra cash in our pockets. Not to mention, it can be nice to get away from school or school work for a few hours. I personally have a really great job and a really great internship that are so different that I am able to get a variety of experiences from them.
I work as a server at Dakota’s Grill and Sports Bar and despite those awful days when we are dead slow, I actually love it. I usually take on a lot of hours at Dakota’s so in my off time I spend more time there than I do at Wingate. The staff at Dakota’s has become like a second family to me, kind of a home away from home. It’s the perfect place for me to go when I need a study break or a few hours off for my mind to relax from homework. Working there has allowed me to learn the importance of being on time, respecting authority, hard work, and the importance of an overall good work ethic. Although I have no intention of being a server for the rest of my life, it has given me a lot of knowledge as to how I can have good morale as an employee regardless of where I work.
My internship is a lot different. I work as an intern for Wingate University’s Marketing and Communication Office. I do a lot of stuff with the newspaper, magazine, website and all of our social media accounts. Working here helps get me ready for the real world. It’s exactly what I want to do when I graduate so I get a lot of really good experience here. Most importantly, I love what I do. All of my assignments are things that I eventually want to do when I graduate so instead of seeing them as “work” I actually want to do them. I also get to experience professional settings, conduct, dress and business interactions. This internship is such a great opportunity for me because I am getting first-hand experience in the field I want to be in.
My job and my internship are so different but have huge impacts on me and my future. It can be difficult to manage my classes, my job and my internship and I can feel overwhelmed sometimes but they both benefit me in unique ways. Dakota’s Restaurant provides a distraction from how busy my life is on campus but my internship is everything I want to do for the rest of my working career. They balance me out and allow me to get what I need socially, academically and personally. I’m grateful for the knowledge I have gained from my job and my internship and blessed to have been given the opportunities that I have. Jobs are nice get-a-ways to have while in college especially because of the extra cash that we get from them. Internships are once in a lifetime experiences that everyone should pursue during their academic career. Managing the balance between everything is a difficult task, but one that can absolutely be done as long as both your mind and heart are in it.
