Verification Process Question and Answer 

 

I HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR VERIFICATION. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME?

The Department of Education will select individual FAFSA applications for a review process called verification. Individuals can be selected for one of the five verification categories. Applicants selected for verification will need to complete a verification worksheet for 2013-2014 corresponding to the individual verification code you have been provided by Wingate University. You should receive one of the following verification codes for 2013-2014: V1, V2, V3, V4, or V5; which will be provided on the Verification Worksheet, Missing Documents Letter, and/or WinLink.

HOW DO I REQUEST AN IRS TAX RETURN TRANSCRIPT?

There are three ways tax filers can request a tax return transcript:

Online:
o Go to
www.irs.gov
o Select “Order a Return or Account Transcript”, located under the “Tools” subheading
o Request a Tax Return Transcript for 2012
o A paper transcript will be mailed to the requestor within 5 to 10 days
 
Telephone:
o Call the IRS Tax Transcript Center at 1-800-908-9946
o A paper transcript will be mailed to the requestor within 5 to 10 days
 

IRS Form 4607T-EZ:
o Download the current form.
o Do not complete Section 5 “Release to a Third Party” – You should have the tax return transcript issued directly to you
o Mail or Fax your request to the appropriate office listed on page 2 of the 4506T-EZ
o A paper transcript will be mailed to the requestor within 5 to 10 days

I DO NOT FILE A TAX RETURN. WHAT INFORMATION DO YOU NEED FROM ME?
 
You will be required to complete the verification worksheet and attest that an IRS 1040 has not and will not be filed and that the IRS 1040 is not required to be filed. Copies of all W-2 forms from all employers must be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Planning.

WHEN SHOULD I SUBMIT THE VERIFICATION PAPERWORK?
 
You should submit all requested documents to our office within 30 days of receiving your notification letter. Please be sure to include the student’s First Name, Last Name, and Student ID number on all documents.
