See for Yourself

Pursuing higher education is an important decision. Going to college marks a new adventure and an investment in your future career path. As a student, it's your responsibility to sign up for your courses, meet deadlines and pay for your college tuition.

Applying for loans can help cover the costs of your education, and you can repay these loans over time. As an alternative or a supplement to that funding, scholarships and merit-based or financial-need-based assistance can help take care of some of your needs. There are all kinds of resources out there to help you find and apply for awards and grants.

At Wingate University, we want you to have every opportunity available for your success. We've compiled a few ideas of ways to find and apply for scholarships and aid so you can find the financial help you may need.

Different Types of Scholarships

If you have a specific talent or hobby, the chances are high that you could use it to apply for college aid. For instance, if you excel at a sport and plan to continue playing in college, you could qualify for athletic aid. If you've pursued community service, some organizations in your community or at the university you're applying to may award scholarships for that as well. Many organizations also offer merit-based scholarships for academic achievements, which is great for students who have the necessary grades.

By making a list of your accomplishments, you can see what you could qualify for as you research different scholarship opportunities.

Where to Look for Scholarships

It's likely that several places online and in your community offer rewards and scholarships. Here are a few different places to check during your search:

  • Local businesses: Companies in your area may have applications for college aid available to you. These submissions vary from business to business, so make sure to read the requirements carefully when you submit an aid form.
  • Organizations: Nonprofits and other kinds of organizations offer aid to college students as well. Groups like these often get to decide how your awards will be spent, whether the funding is sent directly to your university or put toward housing.
  • Websites: There are hundreds of sites on the web that provide you with opportunities to apply for scholarships. Awards can range from small to large amounts, so be sure to explore your options. Many pages will ask for your GPA and academic standing, while some will ask about your background.

Tips for Submitting Scholarship Applications

When you send in a scholarship request, honesty and accuracy are essential. Read all the stipulations before you start to see whether you should write an essay or short paragraphs. Complete all the sections of your application and proofread for any typos. Make sure you have a professional, polished submission package for any aid assistance you ask for. Be sure to submit all responses before the set deadline.

Another important tip is to be confident in yourself! You've accomplished so much in your life, and now is the time to let people know all the positive changes you've made.
