Get a leg-up on the competition in science-related careers and graduate school in Wingate’s Chemistry and Physics Department. Master the fundamentals of chemistry and physics in the lab while gaining hands-on experience with major scientific instrumentation. Work side-by-side at the bench with university professors in collaborative research that results in regional and national presentations and even publication.

Lecture & Laboratory Classes

  • Learn across the curriculum from professors who connect the study of chemistry and physics to other STEM areas in one of our four new research labs.
  • Train on scientific instruments as early as sophomore year to develop skills that will make you career-ready.

Research with Faculty

  • Work collaboratively with a professor on research projects that challenge you to problem solve and hone your laboratory skills.
  • Pursue summer research at Wingate that provides a stipend and covers housing and travel costs related to the research project.
  • Become part of the wider scientific community when you present your research at regional and national conferences.

Internships

  • Experience life as a practicing chemist and earn academic credit with an internship.
  • Many Wingate students participate in undergraduate research through the National Science Foundation and get paid to do summer research with companies and institutions.

Chemistry Club

  • Join our award-winning chapter of the American Chemical Society and bond with others who share your interests!
  • This student-led organization takes chemistry out of the lab and into the community with outings, community service, and chemistry demonstrations at local schools.

My chemistry professors are my academic advisors, research supervisors, and more importantly, life mentors. The personal attention I get from the faculty has helped me greatly with the transition from high school to college and finding internships outside of campus. This past summer, I worked at a local chemical company called Goulston Technologies to apply my in-class knowledge to real-life problems by evaluating different additives for carpet samples to ensure that they remain durable and soft for commercial purpose.Rachel Wu, Class of 2021, Chemistry Major

Wingate sophomores looking to live out the University’s “Faith, Knowledge, Service” motto via a domestic travel program will have a chance this spring to tackle a problem that affects 1 in 8 Americans — food insecurity. W’Engage classes will travel to New Orleans and to western North Carolina to learn and serve.
