Dear New & Returning Members of the Wingate University Band Program,
For those that I haven’t spoken with, my name is Joseph Girgenti and I am honored to be the Director of Athletic Bands. As a member of Wingate’s Class of 2015, I am proud to serve my alma mater in this capacity. I have spent the last nine years teaching band and general music to students in Pre-K through 12th grade, and had the privilege of being the Interim Pep Band Director at Wingate this past fall.
Our current students have been working diligently to help me in many of the logistical and foundational aspects of this new venture. It is with great pleasure that I announce all of the exciting developments regarding our new marching band. The inaugural season for the Spirit of the Gate is going to be one full of hard work and fun. Please review the following information to prepare to join the Spirit of the Gate!

Auditions & Registration
We have merged the audition and registration process to one form. Within the form, you will be asked to upload two videos. For all musicians and performers, the first video will require you to record yourself playing or doing the flag routine to our Fight Song, “On Wisconsin.” The second video will vary based on your chosen position. The Registration form has the details for each type of performer.
The priority deadline is June 30, after that date, students will be put on a waiting list and selection of students will occur based on instrumentation needs and housing availability. Please make sure you have completed your housing request form prior to June 30 so you can be placed in a room.
Leadership
The Spirit of the Gate is looking for enthusiastic student leaders! There are auditioned and non-auditioned positions (see below for an explanation of roles and responsibilities). Auditioned leadership roles will only be available for current Wingate students. Interview-only positions are open to all new and current students. The leadership application will close at noon on May 1.

- Student Leadership Positions are a year-long appointment.
- Duties may be altered, added, or removed at any time by the Director.
- The Director reserves the right to terminate or replace the position of any student leader at any time.
Preseason Camp
All residential students will move in on Thursday, August 8. Families will have the majority of the morning and early afternoon to get students settled in before our afternoon meeting. Commuting students should plan to arrive by 4 p.m.
You will find the tentative Preseason Camp Itinerary below. Daily schedules may adjust slightly, but the overall outline of camp will remain the same. It is expected that all participating students will attend the entirety of the camp. If you know of a conflict, you must let me know as soon as possible so we can discuss.
More specific information regarding the Preseason Camp will be released to all registered members in July.

Class Schedule
All participants will be registered for MUS 108/308: University Athletic Bands, which is a 1 credit course. This course will be repeated each semester students are enrolled. The class will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 - 6 p.m. It is imperative that students attend all class times in order for our band to have the greatest success.
