Counseling
**Because of licensing laws, our counseling services are available only to students who live in North Carolina. If you are out of state, we can assist you via email and/or with a brief phone consultation to end counseling and/or transfer to local services.**
· If you are a new client looking for services, we are offering telephone consultations as well as short-term, solution-focused counseling services in a teletherapy format to interested students who meet the qualifications. A clinician will work with you on figuring out any follow-up meetings and referral to a local clinician if needed. Please email counseling@wingate.edu and include available times (EST) in the coming week and the best phone number to reach you.
· All current clients will be able to use either phone consultation or online services via a confidential, HIPAA-compliant version of Zoom. Moving forward, sessions will focus on how best to take care of yourself during this time away from campus, explore sources of support and ways to cope with anxiety and other moods, and/or discuss next steps. Please email your counselor or counseling@wingate.edu to schedule for either option and include available times (EST) in the coming week and the best phone number to reach you.
· If you desire to have assistance finding and establishing local care, please email us at counseling@wingate.edu. We are equipped to help you establish care where you are located and learn more about using private pay, insurance, and other options. You can also use Psychology Today to find a clinician in your area or ask your primary-care physician for a referral.
· We are starting a virtual support group called “Wellness at Home” for students who are are interested in meeting with a counselor and other students to discuss their experiences adapting to being at home and find support from others going through the same things. Please email counseling@wingate.edu if you are interested in receiving more information about this support group.

Federal Student Loans
On March 13, 2020, the president announced that interest would be waived on all federally held student loans. Which loans are covered by the announcement?
All loans owned by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) will have interest waived. That includes Direct Loans, as well as Federal Perkins Loans and Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans held by ED.
If my loans are owned by ED, do I need to do anything for the interest on my loans to be waived?
No, ED will automatically adjust your account so that interest doesn’t accrue. The account adjustment will be effective March 13, 2020. During this period of no interest, if you continue to make payments, the full amount will be applied to principal. However, if your loan had already accrued interest prior to President Trump’s March 13 announcement, your payments will first be used to pay off that outstanding interest.
Will my monthly payment go down because interest is being waived?
No. Your monthly payment will remain the same, but the full amount of the payment will be applied to already accrued interest and/or outstanding principal. This means that you are likely to pay your balance down more quickly during this zero-interest period.
If I make loan payments after March 13, how will they be applied?
During the period of no interest, the full amount of your payments will be applied to principal once all the interest that accrued prior to President Trump’s March 13 announcement is paid. As you will see below, you can suspend your payments for at least 60 days without additional interest accruing.
How long will interest be waived?
Interest will not accrue on federally held student loans for at least 60 days, beginning on March 13, 2020. ED may extend that period, depending on the status of the COVID-19 national emergency.
On March 20, the president said I can suspend payments on my loans. What do I need to do to suspend my payments?
You can ask for an administrative forbearance. Being in an administrative forbearance means that you can temporarily stop making your federal student loan payments without becoming delinquent. Because interest is being waived during the COVID-19 national emergency, interest will not accrue (accumulate) while you are in forbearance. If you request an administrative forbearance, you will not have any payments due for as long as the administrative forbearance lasts. Your loan servicer will cancel any scheduled auto-debit payments. After the administrative forbearance ends, you will have to resume making payments. If you wish to use auto-debit, you may restart auto-debit payments; they will not automatically resume.
What if I am already more than 31 days past due on my payments?
If you’re at least 31 days behind on your payments as of March 13, 2020, or become more than 31 days delinquent after that date, you’ll automatically be placed in an administrative forbearance to give you a safety net during the COVID-19 national emergency.
If I want an administrative forbearance, do I have to request it, or will I get one automatically?
If you want to request an administrative forbearance, you should request one by contacting your loan servicer. If you do not know who your servicer is or how to contact them, visit StudentAid.gov/login or call us at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243; TTY for the deaf or hearing-impaired 1-800-730-8913) for assistance.
Note: If you’re at least 31 days behind on your payment as of March 13, 2020, or become more than 31 days delinquent after that date, you’ll automatically be placed in the administrative forbearance to give you a safety net during the COVID-19 national emergency.
For further information, please contact your loan servicer. Contact information for your loan servicer can be found by logging into NSLDS at https://nslds.ed.gov/npas/index.htm.

Pass/Fail Policy
This message was sent to Wingate students on March 30, 2020 from Vice Provost for Student Engagement Nancy Randall.
Amidst all the challenges and unknowns associated with COVID-19 and coursework during this semester, I am so pleased to be able to let you know that Wingate University will, for the Spring 2020 semester only, provide you with options (like pass/fail) on how your final grade in each course will be permanently recorded on your Wingate University transcript.
Let me explain.
Undergraduate Grading Policies:
- A student may withdraw from a course at any time prior to the day of the final exam.
- Upon receipt of the final grade (as posted in WinLINK), a student with a grade of “D” or better may withdraw from the course if formally requested of the Registrar by May 15, 2020.
- Upon receipt of the final grade, a student with a grade of “C-” or better may have that grade recorded as a “P” (indicating Pass) if formally requested of the Registrar by May 15, 2020.
Please note, undergraduates, that:
- A grade of “P” will not impact your grade point average positively or negatively.
- You do earn course credit with a grade of “P”.
- Withdrawing from a class means you are losing those credits.
- Any grade of F will lower your grade point average.
- The U. S. Department of Education is awaiting final language from the CARES Act which was signed by President Trump this weekend. A separate email with information regarding Satisfactory Academic Progress and P/F grades will be sent to you from the Financial Planning Office as soon as final language is received.
- Contact your advisor or ACDC (Academic and Career Development Office at academicadvising@wingate.edu) before you make any decisions based on these options.
Graduate & Health Sciences Grading Policies:
- A student may withdraw from a course at any time prior to the day of the final exam
- Upon receipt of the final grade, a student with a grade of “C” or better may have that grade recorded as a “P” if formally requested of the Registrar by May 15, 2020.
- Students applying to graduate programs should determine if a Pass will satisfy admission requirements.
Again, I am glad we can provide you with some options for the recording of final grades that will meet your individual circumstances during this most unusual and, for many, difficult semester.
Paw Print

- Students can request a change of address from individual companies.
- USPS can offer a forwarding option for all material for a fee of $1.05.

Payment Plans

- For more information, click here.
Residential Students
All students returning to campus for class, including commuters, must be tested for COVID-19 before they return to their residence halls or before attending class. These tests will be provided at no cost, so that we can ensure a smooth transition into the Spring semester and to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The University will also stagger residential return in much the same way you experienced in the Fall. Here’s what Return to Campus will look like in January:
Drive-Thru Location
Indoor Locations
|
Students will receive communication through WUSync indicating if they are approved for their requested return date. Students who are not approved can resubmit and request an available date. New residential students should plan to check-in on January 15 or January 19.
