Sociology Degree Program
ABOUT SOCIOLOGY
The sociology major at Wingate is unique. You receive a well-rounded introduction to the social sciences with an in-depth focus on marriage and family. The sociology faculty also places a strong emphasis on research, and most students participate in at least one research project. After graduation, you are prepared to enter the job market or continue with an advanced degree in graduate school. To gain experience in the field, many students undertake a professional internship, typically in the summer between their junior and senior year. Course requirements for the sociology major include, in addition to required coursework:
- A research project with a faculty member
- Three marriage and family classes
- Two research methods classes
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
A degree in sociology is the first step toward dozens of rewarding careers. Recent Wingate sociology graduates have found employment in law enforcement, elementary school teaching, as a customer service agent for an international airline and as an activities director at a senior living center. Several are counselors at treatment facilities. Many others have gone on to graduate school to pursue careers in academia or policy.
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
Sociology majors at Wingate earn either a BS or BA degree. Students may also minor in sociology.
