You’ll find plenty of reasons to applaud the George A. Batte, Jr. Fine Arts Center.

Culture plays a big part in life at Wingate University. Fortunately, we have the George A. Batte, Jr. Fine Arts Center, affectionately known as the Batte Center. Prominently located near the northern edge of Wingate University’s campus, the Batte Center hosts more than 500 events each year.

The Batte Center contains two venues to accommodate performances large and small. But to say the center is just a performance space would be misleading. Its curved walls are also home to Wingate University’s music department, the C. Douglas Helms Art Gallery and the Batte Center administration offices.

Batte Center Background Music

The Great Depression forced the center’s namesake to put off his dreams of attending medical school. George went to work at Cannon Textile Mills instead and climbed to a top management position, where he focused on philanthropic and humanitarian efforts associated with the mills. He is responsible for Cabarrus County’s first public hospital and the George A. Batte Jr. Cancer Center. Throughout his years leading Cannon Textile Mills’ efforts to support the community, he made many generous contributions to Wingate University. To thank him for his generosity to both the university and the local area, we named the center in his honor.
