Rhett Brown installed as president during a week-long celebration of faith, knowledge and service.
Wingate University installed its 10th president, Dr. T. Rhett Brown, during seven days of inauguration activities in April 2016. The inauguration events and the theme of Dr. Brown’s inauguration speech highlighted the university’s motto: Faith, Knowledge, Service.
Inauguration Week activities included a “Day of Service” with projects for Wingate University students and employees, a three-day symposium to showcase student research, a dinner for honored guests, a worship service, an inaugural ball for students, athletic events, receptions at Wingate University’s campuses in south Charlotte and Hendersonville, a concert, a “Day of Giving” to benefit Wingate University’s Annual Fund and the installation ceremony.
During the ceremony on April 7, the Oath of Office was administered and previous Wingate University President Dr. Jerry McGee presented Brown with the university’s presidential medallion and chain.
In his inauguration address, Brown said, “leading my alma mater is the privilege of a lifetime.” He talked about the meaning of the three Latin words on the Wingate University seal: Fides, Scientia, Pietas, often translated as faith, knowledge and service. In his remarks, he gave insight on how to live a life that embodies the concepts of trust and confidence, of learning and using knowledge and of service to the larger community.
“Our guiding purpose at Wingate University is to change lives for the better,” Brown said in his speech. “Our pursuit is a knowledge that informs and integrates our faith and leads us to serve others.”
