If you are taking 12 or more credit hours, you are required to provide proof of your personal health insurance or enroll in the Wingate University Student Health Plan (currently BCBS).  All Health Science students, athletes and international students are required to have health insurance regardless of credit hours. This plan is not available to non-Health Science students taking less than 12 credit hours or students taking only online classes.

Submit your insurance information online whether you choose to accept or waive Wingate University’s health insurance plan.

The cost is $2,686.80/year or $1,343.40/semester.

Students may have a comparable existing health insurance policy through parent plans, family plans or employer-sponsored plans. If you do, you must waive out every year while enrolled at Wingate University to avoid being charged for the university’s plan.

Comparable health plans...

• Must be a policy from the United States
• Must be a full health policy (not accident only) and provides both emergency and non-emergency benefits, including mental health, in North Carolina
• Must be a minimum total benefit/coverage of $100,000 (USD) per accident or illness
• Must be currently active and covers the student for the duration of the current semester
• Provides coverage within a 25-mile radius of Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina
• Cannot be a short-term or travel policy
• Cannot be an international plan
• Cannot have an individual, out-of-pocket maximum of more than $6,000 (USD)
• No out of state Medicaid plan is accepted

Students may elect to accept the health insurance plan offered by Wingate University. Alternatively, they can choose to purchase their own comparable insurance plan and complete the online waiver by the deadline for each semester. Students who don’t complete the waiver are charged for health insurance and are automatically enrolled in the university’s plan.

The deadline to complete the online waiver is August 1 for the fall semester or Jan. 1 for the spring semester.

In addition to complying with the ACA, some Health Center services require additional fees. Health insurance gives you access to services and specialists not available in the on-campus Health Center.

To help students offset the cost of an unexpected illness or injury.

We have found local providers do not accept international policies which leaves the student with no access to specialty care if needed. Adequate insurance coverage that is accepted locally helps offset the cost of an unexpected illness or injury. The plan must be a United States based health plan that is compliant with the ACA. For students enrolled in the BCBS Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) offered through Wingate, most office visit fees, medications, lab services and office procedures  performed in the Health Center are covered at 100%. Any fees not covered at 100% will be applied to the students account.

No student will be turned away from the Health Center for inability to pay.  If a student is unable to pay the office visit fee, they may declare medical hardship status by completing the Declaration of Financial Hardship form.  Medical hardship status is granted on a case-by-case basis.

Please check with your insurance plan to verify coverage at the Health Center at Wingate University.  Students who have insurance plans not accepted in the Health Center will be considered a self-pay patient and will be billed accordingly.  

In order for us to submit claims on your behalf, you must provide us with your current health insurance card.  We will file for any charges incurred with your primary insurance carrier. If we are not considered “in-network” or your annual deductible has not been met, it is possible that your insurance will not pay for your charges.

The student does not have to reschedule, however, the student will be asked to call the policyholder (i.e. mom, dad or guardian) to get us the insurance information. It is the student's responsibility to get us the information so we may bill the insurance company. If the student is unable to provide us with the information, they will have the option of being seen without using their insurance and paying the fees accrued from the visit.

The health fee provides students the opportunity to receive quality, multidisciplinary health care, wellness, and health maintenance while supporting the growing needs of our students.  All Wingate University students are required to pay a health fee each semester. Services covered by the health fee include:

• Up to 10 visits with a counselor per semester

• Blood pressure screening

• Select over-the-counter medications

• Vision screening

• Hearing screening

• Educational programming

• Safer sex supplies

• Chronic disease management education with a nurse

• Minor wound care and supplies

• Medication counseling with a nurse

• Unlimited visits with a Physical Therapist
