Billing
For each visit to the Health Center, please bring your insurance card and your Wingate Student ID Card. Each student must read and sign financial intake forms at their first visit to the Health Center.
We know health care costs are confusing, and billing for services can be complicated. Let us help you. Call 704-233-8102 for billing questions.
Payment for Services
A student will never need to have cash/credit in hand to be seen in the Health Center; however, there are fees associated with seeing a Provider along with fees for other services such as lab tests, office procedures, or medications. If your insurance has a co-pay requirement, the co-pay will be billed to your student account. If your insurance has a coinsurance or deductible that has not been met, the Health Fee may be used to cover a portion of the office visit fee associated with seeing a Provider. Any uncovered expenses will automatically be applied to the students account.
Services not covered by the Health Fee that incur additional charges include (but not limited to) the following:
-
Laboratory tests
-
Injections
-
Laceration repair
-
Abscess Incision and Drain
-
Physical examinations (form completion/athletic physicals)
-
Prescription medications are filled at our on site pharmacy. Upon request medications can be phoned into your pharmacy of choice.
-
Medical supplies (bandages, splints, braces, crutch rental, etc.)
-
Travel health visits
-
Care received outside the Health Center
For students enrolled in the BCBS Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) offered through Wingate, most office visit fees, medications, lab services and office procedures performed in the Health Center are covered at 100%. Any fees not covered at 100% will be applied to the students account.
No student will be turned away from the Health Center for inability to pay. If a student is unable to pay the office visit fee, they may declare medical hardship status by completing the Declaration of Financial Hardship form. Medical hardship status is granted on a case-by-case basis.

Please check with your insurance plan to verify coverage at the Health Center at Wingate University. We do not participate in Medicare or Tricare; therefore, cannot file insurance claims. Students who have insurance plans not accepted in the Health Center will be considered a self-pay patient and will be billed accordingly. We cannot file any HMO policies, Atrium or Novant only plans or EPO plans.
In order for us to submit claims on your behalf, you must provide us with your current health insurance card. We will file for any charges incurred with your primary insurance carrier. If we are not considered “in-network” or your annual deductible has not been met, it is possible that your insurance will not pay for your charges.
We will wait an appropriate time period from the date of filing the claim to receive payment. If the charges are denied or are unpaid, we will transfer the balance to the students account. We will not enter into a dispute with your health insurance company over your claim; this is your responsibility and obligation.
It is your responsibility to inform us in a timely manner of any changes to your billing/insurance information.
Privacy
To protect your privacy, we will not post medical details on your student account. We will give you an itemized statement upon request. When you use your health insurance, the policyholder (the main person on the health insurance plan) may receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from the insurance company. The EOB lists the services you received, how much the insurance paid, and the amount (if any) that you are responsible for. If you do not want to risk something private and personal appearing on your EOB, you can decide at each appointment whether to use your insurance for that visit. If you elect not to use your insurance, you will be considered “self-pay” and your insurance will not be filed. You will need to notify the nurse and/or provider at the time of your service.
