About Me

I joined Wingate University as provost Aug. 1, 2016. Previously, I served as associate vice president for academic affairs at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia.

As provost, I am Wingate University’s chief academic officer, overseeing the institution’s more than 40 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral-level programs on three campuses.

I have experience in organizational restructuring and leadership, designing and implementing successful academic programs, developing curriculum, evaluating faculty and staff, improving student achievement, and fostering collaboration in higher education.

I have served as division leader of Arts and Communication Studies at Columbia College, a women’s college in Columbia, South Carolina, and taught at Georgia Southwestern State University, Columbia College, Indiana University and Lamar University in Orange, Texas.
After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech communication from Idaho State University, I received my Ph.D. in speech communication with a minor in gender studies from Indiana University.

Tate has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching and has authored five peer-reviewed journal articles. Tate has been active in the Women’s Caucus of the National Communication Association and is a frequent presenter at professional conferences across the U.S.

Wingate brought back the provost position for the first time since the 1990s as one way to address rapid enrollment growth.
