Accomplishments

John Mangum ’65 was named Union County Man of the Year for 2018, for his work as a volunteer fireman and first responder and his service as a commissioner for the town of Wingate. He was also honored in October 2018 for a half-century of service to the Wingate Volunteer Fire Department.

Beverly Haigler-Daly ’67, ’90 received the 2018 Cytotechnologist Award for Outstanding Achievement from the American Society of Cytopathology.

Mike Moore ’68, longtime radio broadcaster, has launched MikeMoore.Media in Rockingham County, North Carolina, his home since 1972. His daily podcasts feature interviews, and local news and information.

Allen Blume ’69 has retired as editor-president of The Biblical Recorder. He served in that position for eight years.

Steven Boyd ’72 has joined the Board of Trustees for Catawba Valley Community College. A real estate agent, Boyd is a founder of Weichert Realtors.

David Sparks ’76 retired after 25 years as director of the Dixie Classic Fair, North Carolina’s second-largest agricultural fair. Sparks managed more than $10.2 million worth of capital improvements and infrastructure during his tenure.

David Parrish ’78 is a senior CRA, working in clinical trials, at Kowa Research Institute in Research Triangle Park.

Cynthia Brasher ’83 is corporate director of pastoral care for the Cape Fear Valley Health System.

Doug Jones ’84 retired as athletic director for Union County Public Schools, a position he had held since 2009.

C.F. McDowell III ’85 served as one of two P.A. announcers for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers minor-league baseball team during their inaugural season in 2019.

Colon McLean ’86 is the chief human resources officer for Alight Solutions in suburban Chicago. McLean was previously chief human resources officer for the Warranty Group.

Randy Joines ’88 has retired from teaching and coaching at Bunker Hill High School, where he has taught since 2010. Previously, he taught and coached a variety of sports at North Wilkes High School, where he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2017.

Martin House ’94 earned his doctor of education degree from Northeastern University in August of 2018. House is assistant director for public services for Central Piedmont Community College.

Patrick Brown ’95 received the Distinguished Alumnus Award during the University’s Blue Carpet Gala in October. Brown is CEO of Innovative Aftermarket Systems in Austin, Texas.

Amee Odom ’95 received the Excellence in Service Award during the University’s Blue Carpet Gala in October. Odom has been director of the University’s Ethel K. Smith Library for 18 years. She also received the Knowledge Award during the Employee Service Awards banquet at Wingate in April.

Jason Foster ’99 was inducted into the Wingate Sports Hall of Fame. The four-time all-SAC selection hit .377 for his career, capping off his four years with All-America honors his senior year, when he hit .422 with 20 doubles, 15 homers and 64 RBI.

Anna Harvley ’99 was named teacher of the year for the Kershaw County (S.C.) School District’s Applied Technology Education Campus. Harvley is a health sciences instructor at the school.

Daniel Bruce ’00 is the new principal at Traveler’s Rest (S.C.) High School.

Jake McDonough ’02 is a senior loan officer for QuickFund mortgage brokers in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

Marcus Scott ’02 is a project coordinator with WYN Consultants, a project-management firm based in Concord, N.C.

Ronnie Stafford ’02 became the head librarian at Northeastern Technical College in Cheraw, S.C., in January 2019.

Ginny Boggess ’03 has joined the women’s basketball coaching staff at Penn State University. Boggess previously spent five years as an assistant coach at Marquette, where she was the primary recruiting coordinator.

Terrance Michael Hinton ’03 received his Ph.D. in public policy and administration from Walden University on Aug. 12, 2018.

Amanda Harris-Morgan ’04 (MBA) is the head softball coach at Catawba College.

Brad Hinson ’04 is the new athletic director at Green Hope High School in Cary. Hinson previously spent five years as athletic director at Cox Mill High School in Concord.

Natalie Edwards Bishop ’05 is the associate dean of the library at Gardner-Webb University. Bishop completed her doctorate in education with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction at Gardner-Webb in 2018. For her research, she was awarded the Darlene J. Gravett Citizen Scholar Award, which honors scholarship with the potential to have a distinct contribution to the improvement society and education.

Rosy Del Carmen Crumpton ’05 received the Champion of Diversity Award during the University’s Blue Carpet Gala in October. Crumpton, an author and speaker, is the diversity specialist for Developmental Disabilities Resources, Inc., in Charlotte.

Andrew Kell ’05 is the new athletic director at Loganville (Ga.) Christian Academy. He previously served as assistant athletic director at Metrolina Christian Academy in Indian Trail.

Nick DeLangie ’06, ’08 (MAT) received his doctor of education in kinesiology from UNC-Greensboro in May. DeLangie is strategic leader for business intelligence at the University.

Seth Furr ’06 graduated from the United Way of Anderson County (S.C.)’s Young Philanthropists Academy. Over eight months, Furr and other YPs learned to “give of their time, talent and treasure” to better the Anderson community.

Christopher Scocco ’06 earned his Ph.D. in entomology and nematology from the University of Florida in August of 2018. Scocco’s research focused on molecular genetics and phylogenetic reclassification. In August of 2018 he took a job as a medical affairs specialist at Johnson & Johnson Vision in Orlando, Fla.

Heather DeLangie ’07 received her doctor of education in kinesiology from UNC-Greensboro in May. DeLangie is an adjunct professor at the University.

Melanie Jean Romanaux ’07 received the Outstanding Young Alumna Award during the University’s Blue Carpet Gala in October. Romanaux has served as CEO of Somedia Solutions for the past nine years.

Adam Brooks ’07 was presented with the 2019 Richard H. Hagemeyer Educational Advancement Award during Central Piedmont Community College’s May 16 commencement. Brooks, senior manager of learning and development for Charter Communications, earned an associate degree from CPCC in 2004. The award is given annually to a former Central Piedmont student who has benefited significantly from experiences at CPCC and whose efforts have helped the community. Brooks have volunteered on a number of boards for area nonprofits and economic-development teams, including the Matthews Economic Development Advisory Committee, The Red Brick Partnership, and the Armed Forces Museum and Archives of the Carolinas. He also helps Charlotte men in need by giving them quality, vintage dress shoes that he personally restores through his shoe ministry.

Sean Barnette ’08 was inducted into the Wingate Sports Hall of Fame. A South Atlantic Conference Male Athlete of the Year and an All-American in basketball, Barnette left Wingate as the SAC’s all-time leading scorer, with 2,324 points. At the time, he was also second in career rebounds in the conference.

Michael Cabana ’08 (MASA) was named the NCAA Division II coach of the year for women’s tennis by the International Tennis Association. Cabana guided the Bulldogs to a 21-2 record. Cabana is 205-89 in 13 seasons as women’s head coach, including a 105-16 South Atlantic Conference mark. Cabana is 197-97 (102-18) as men’s coach.

Bryan Grier ’08 was inducted into the Wingate Sports Hall of Fame. Grier’s 455 blocks are 32 more than anyone else in NCAA Division II history, and he is seventh all-time in blocks among all NCAA divisions. He is the only player in South Atlantic Conference history to record more than 100 blocks in a season, a feat he accomplished three times.

Anthony Perkins ’08 (M.Ed.) is the new principal at Falkland Elementary School in Greenville, N.C.

Melissa DeLuca Shuett ’08, ’11 (M.Ed.) was inducted into the Wingate Sports Hall of Fame. The volleyball star became the first Wingate player named All-American by the AVCA. She is Wingate’s all-time leader with 4,869 assists. She was also named first-team Academic All-America.

Cassidy Benjamin ’09 is the associate director of foundation outreach at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst.

James Hall ’09, ’12 (MBA) is the senior director of ticket sales and consumer marketing at Richmond Raceway in Richmond, Virginia.

Evan Schaller ’09 has been promoted to partner and shareholder in Breslin, Young & Slaughter, a financial-services firm in Forest Hill, Md. Schaller will oversee BY&S’s quality-of-earnings and real-estate products.

Scott Muri ’10 (Ed.D.) recently joined the Ector County (Tx.) Independent School District as its superintendent. Muri was previously superintendent of the Spring Branch (Tx.) Independent School District.

Thomas Reese ’10 is the receivers coach for the Mars Hill University football team.

Alex Yost ’11 is an actor and performer for Norwegian Cruise Line. In the spring, he played Danny Zuko in two weeks of sold-out shows at the Temple Theatre in Sanford, N.C.

Kyle Leonard ’12 has been elected to the Mt. Airy City Schools Board of Education. He will serve a four-year term.

Matt Sierk ’12 was sworn in as an officer with the Monroe Police Department in 2018.

Jim Holland ’13 (MBA) recently retired as assistant manager for Buncombe County. Holland worked for Buncombe County for nearly 30 years.

Callie Phillips ’13 (MASM) received her doctor of education in kinesiology from UNC-Greensboro in May. Phillips will soon begin her 10th season as head volleyball coach at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, where she will also teach as an adjunct professor in the Hospitality College this fall. Phillips led J&W to the USCAA Division 2 national championship in the fall.

Reggie Robinson ’13 and his wife, Cami Robinson, have written a marital guide called “Marriage: Expert Schmexpert, published by 2wice Born Productions.

Lindsey Pelusi ’14 (Ed.D.) became the new principal at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Kannapolis, N.C., in July. 

Chan Anderson ’16 (Ed.D.) is the assistant superintendent of personnel and planning for the Chesterfield County (S.C.) School District.

Elma Nfor ’17 is a forward for Lansing Ignite FC, a professional soccer team, based in Lansing, Mich., that plays in USL League One.

Logan Pingley ’17 graduated from the Virginia State Police Academy in February. He is serving as a trooper in Albemarle County, Va.

Katelyn Grissilo ’18 (MASM) was named a Thirty-Under-30 honoree by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. The program recognizes 30 up-and-coming women’s coaches at all levels across the country. Grisillo recently completed her third season as assistant coach with Wingate’s women’s basketball team.

Tripp Wright ’18 has started Heart for Iberia, a nonprofit that tackles a variety of need-based projects in New Iberia, Louisiana. The organization is modeled after Heart for Monroe (N.C.), for which Wright volunteered during his time at Wingate.
