The NCNBS helps students who need it.

two students walk past the fountainThe North Carolina Need-Based Scholarship (NCNBS) is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. This state funding can be combined with other grants, scholarships and loans as long as it doesn’t exceed the cost of education.

Who Qualifies?

You may qualify if you meet the following criteria:

  • You’re a permanent resident of North Carolina
  • Your effective family contribution doesn’t exceed $15,000.

How to Apply

Complete the FAFSA by May 1 of each year. Once you have been awarded funding, you must also fill out the NCNBS-FELS Residency Form.

How to Maintain Eligibility

To maintain your eligibility for a NCNBS, make sure you:

  • Are enrolled as a full-time student (12 credit hours or more) or 3/4 time (9–11 credit hours)
  • Maintain satisfactory progress in your studies

You may receive NCNBS for a maximum of nine semesters.
